Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I approach art as a visceral, dynamic confrontation. Every piece begins with the unknown and evolves through aggressive cutting, painting, and texture until hidden forms reveal themselves.
The physical confrontation with the surface
When standing before a blank board, there is momentary bewilderment—then immediate action. Working primarily on durable masonite, I cut, scrub, and score into the board with sharp and abrasive tools. This active, tactile method uncovers hidden depths and images that only emerge once I pause and step back.
Wrestling the canvas into form
Drawing on my background as a high school wrestler, creating art often feels like stepping onto the mat. I continuously move pieces between table and easel, circling each board to capture changing angles and lighting while listening to Beethoven, Shostakovich, or Led Zeppelin. Using diverse brushes, rollers, knives, and layered photographs, each work balances raw motion and structure.
Resourceful creation in Santa Fe
My work relies on acrylic paints, but nearly any found material can find a purpose on the board. Guided by a strong aversion to waste and inspired by the enduring atmosphere of Santa Fe, I integrate disparate elements into unified, expressive mixed-media works designed to resonate with collectors.
